In an effort to improve water conveying throughout the Cottonwood Heights area, the Metropolitan Water District of Salt Lake & Sandy (MWDSLS) hired Hazen and Sawyer to design and engineer this project, which installs over 2,000 linear feet of new welded steel pipe. 2 prime contractors, COP Construction and Whitaker Construction were selected to tackle this complex, multi-year project that takes place throughout various active streets, including Fort Union Boulevard.
Given the fast construction schedule and steel pipe welding complexities for pipes that vary between 36 and 72 inches in diameter, Hazen partnered with OCI to provide a full time consultant for welding observation and inspections. We also observed ongoing trench excavation, backfill, pipe setting, and non-destructive testing of pipe joints. OCI works with both COP and Whitaker, as well as their welding subcontractors, to see that welding quality is achieved correctly and in a timely manner that does not hold up pipe backfill or opening roadways back up to the public.
